Politics

My cousin's granddaughter Karen (that's her looking very elegant in the red ballgown) has just returned from Washington D.C. and the inauguration ceremonies. It has renewed my faith in the future generation in that she and many young adults her age are involved. Really involved. Karen was a Political Major at DU and worked for Colorado Senator Wayne Allard. While she is a republican, she was able to take the bipartisan approach and attend the inauguration and witness such an amazing occasion. One lucky lady she was. Here at home, I felt proud to be an American as I watched what Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and the thousands that followed wanted to impart on our country - simple act of democracy in the changing of leadership. Being involved in politics is maddening to say the least, and the rest of us who just sit on the sidelines and watch it happen often feel powerless. I know I do, watching a tax-evading scofflaw become the Secretary of the Treasury, despite the uproar of the people. What are we to do? Phone calls and mass emails seem to be ignored by our local representatives, be it Congress, Senate, or House of Representatives, none seem to listen. I didn't vote for Obama. I'm a little scared of his actions so far as President. But I can't stop him now.
However, it gives me hope for our future, for that of my daughter, knowing there are people like Karen, who do care about our government. Bless her, because the whole thing is a beast that can't be tamed. But she is willing to get out there, be involved, maybe make a difference. It's more that I can say I have done. While I have always been patriotic, and exercised my rights as an American and voted, I know there was always more that I could do. Maybe now is the time I must do something - now more than ever.
