The alphabet is the most often song to be heard in our house these days. We sing it when we brush teeth, cook dinner, and when we ride in the car. We sing it in every possible voice, at different tempos, we even try to sing it backwards. I am sick of the alphabet. But for a girl who is now 5-1/2, it is the biggest thing she has learned in the past 100 days of kindergarten.
It amazes me how much the alphabet can spin off into so many other ways, teaching her the basics of words. Already, she can identify about 30 words, and knows how they fit into our language. My favorite was when she could tell me the vowels, and how she has 3, 3 mommy!!! in her name alone! She has begun to make her own books, stapling together several pieces of paper and printing, very carefully, a title and description of each picture she draws. We spell out the words for her and she prints the letters, sometimes looking at us funny when we tell her that "fight" has a g and h in it. I can't explain why, but that's how it is, sweetie.
She covets every notebook I have, asking if she could have it, or one like it, especially the mini sized ones with tiny pens. She sees me writing, and of course copies me. This is the part I love - especially when she understands how it all goes together to be a book. When she says something particularly creative or funny, to her delight I write it down. The best one came the last time it snowed. She says to me, "Mommy, I like when it snows. It makes the world like a coloring book for me to color."
The wonderment of the alphabet, and how it all begins there. In the 26 simple letters, each a different shape but not always a different sound, the beginning.
