Recently, I posted about the school snack cart. I have been following School Meals That Rock on Facebook and the USDA’s "Smart Snacks in Schools" Proposal
The proposal is to set standards for healthier snacks that are sold in schools. I agree that we want healthier choices - processed and chemical laden foods have no place in anyone's diet. But do we really need to sell snacks in elementary school at all? I am in the cafeteria during lunchtimes, and I see students wasting so much food already. Offering snacks gives them an out to eating their provided lunch - from home or purchased at school (or a free or reduced cost lunch). And at $1.00 it's not too expensive, but yet it's overpriced for that they actually get. Here's the cart at our school earlier this month:
As you can see there are baked chips, sun chips, funyions, popcorn (white cheddar) rice krispies treats, frosted chocolate brownies (fresh baked from a mix), beef jerky (extra sodium, anyone?) and those darn pop tarts. Also are fruit flavored gummy snacks, ritz bits (with processed cheese) and funtastix. No fruit rollups this time, but they are usually there. I ask you, are ANY of these considered healthy? And are they necessary?
The USDA has a the proposal on the docket and are asking for comments. I urge you to take a minute to send yours. http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketBrowser;rpp=25;po=0;D=FNS-2011-0019
Here is my comment:
I have not yet seen the argument as to WHY we even need snacks offered in schools. These should be an after-school item, provided by parents (or caregivers). Since they are not a requirement in any way at school, and are equally not necessary, this whole discussion is ridiculous. I work at an elementary school, have cafeteria duty, and see so much wasted food, especially fruit cups (provided as a part of the purchased lunch) which is on the approved snack list. Also on the list - peanuts! That is a huge no-no, due to allergies! And last, but not least, flavored water - artificial sweeteners are one of the least favorable items I want to serve my child.
I would love to hear arguments FOR the snack carts. Anyone?
