Home Improvement Journey - Day One
The very first thing on the list was to return the playroom to the garage that it once was. This was the least expensive and the easiest of all to do. Taking down the wall that had been built over the door opening was surprisingly easy - nothing so far in this house has been easy. Pulling down paneling and knocking out 2x4's went pretty quick. There was only one minor moment of frustration between us (not my fault, of course!) When we were done we did a high five - after all, this is a good start. We had to tack up the paneling to cover the door's opening until the installers get here, but on, such sweet victory over what we were afraid might be a problem. When it came time to reposition the electrical outlet back on the ceiling, that's when it became dicey. Mark had to get up into the ceiling, into the insulation and dust, and pull the line back. All while I held the ladder (well, what else could I do?). Plus he got to use the saw-zall that he found in the middle of the street one day last fall near his job. Sure made cutting a hole a whole lot easier! Of course, there must be one thing that doesn't go right, and just as he placed the last screw in the outlet cover, the cover snapped. But that's just a minor detail!
My satisfaction came when we were able to pull out the cat-pee filled carpet and pad. No matter how many times I cleaned the carpet (say, oh, 6 times?!!!) the smell never really went away, and each time it rained it was worse. With the garage floor again bare cement, it looks more like the garage we want (well, you-know-who wants it more than I do, especially for that motorcycle!). Each night this past week he has sat out in the almost garage and planned out how it will be arranged, what will be "allowed" in the garage (not much room for my car, of course...) and where to place the Snap On Tool calendars (complete with tool holders - in bikinis!)
We scraped the glue from the carpet pad from the cement, swept the nooks and crannies, cleared the space for the door install. Oh, anticipation......
Regardless, it's great to finally have action, and to be moving forward. For these past years we have been stuck on hold, not sure of where we would be heading. Now at least we have an idea of the next 5 years, maybe more. That is, if we survive the home remodeling journey. As long as it doesn't turn into the Money Pit and drive us to ruin, we'll be fine.
