Shoveling

I have a neighbor who until recently did not clear the snow from the sidewalk around his house. He lives on the corner and has an extra long sidewalk - but he knew that when he moved in. It is also the path to the school bus stop, which is shaded by his fence and quickly becomes ice. Thick ice that does not melt until a week of warm weather. Ice that caused the kids to walk in the street for safety. He is the youngest adult on the block, and the only one who doesn't clear the snow. Until recently. The city code enforcement lady paid him a visit. I noticed her truck, and being "neighborhood watch" I watched. He answered the door. She gave him the speech (I can assume, I don't have that great of hearing!) and it seemed to have emphasis on do it or pay a fine. She left. He closed the door. And soon went out to clear the snow.

So I wondered how long this would last. But as we had another round of snow last week, I see it's clear. Must have been the chance of a very large fine to get him out there. But I'm glad he did. We have a nice neighborhood, and his house is the "one" as there always is on every block. Maybe this is the kick in the pants he needed. Let's see what happens when the weeds grow in the summer.
